THE ALBUQUERQUE REVIEW

ALBUQUERQUE NEW MEXICO, SATURDAY, MAY 13, 1876, Page 2

ARRIVED--Henry Springer has just arrived from Round Valley. A.T., where he has established a large mercantile house.  He is jubliant over the prospects of that section, and in this only corroborates everyone who has seen it.   A Town site has been laid off called "Springerville," and several substantial houses are in process of erection.   Asa Walker has sent East for a first class billard table to start a saloon there, and many other improvements are on foot. Milligan is putting a flouring mill at his ranch, also a saw-mill.  The house is nearly completed and is of stone, the walls being two feet thick.  The machinery has been ordered from the East.  Within fifteen miles of Round Valley, there are  mines in the Escudilla Mountains, several Californians having passed the winter there watching their claims; they are expecting more of their friends from California.  The farmers were all busy putting in their crops, and are in good spirits as to prospects.  On his way out stopped with our old friends the Brophys and found them well and glad to hear from their old neighbors.  McCullough, at Round Valley, is the second settler in that section and is very hospitable to all who call on him, his latch string is always out.  Springer returned by the shortest and best route from this place to Round Valley, a table of distances and camping places on the route being given herewith. Nathan Barth came in with Springer, is looking fine and well contented with that section where he and his brothers have located permanently.  We are glad to see Springer home again, as he is a live business man and is, always going ahead.  Nathan Barth will leave for Round Valley on Monday of next week, he expects to make the trip in two days.  List of camping grounds between Albuquerque and Round Valley:

Having received yesterday the compliment of a call from Nathan Barth, of St. Johns, Colorado Chiquito, A.T.,we elicited from him the following:  As mentioned elsewhere, he came in from Round Valley with Mr. Springer, of whom he speaks in unmeasured terms of praise as a very agreeable companion, a perfect gentleman and a very early riser.  Mr. B. is well acquainted with the residents of Round Valley, and those of the prospective town of Springerville, and says they are some of the most energetic and cleverest people in Arizona.  He also said that Mr. J. O'Neil of Round Valley has sent to California for two hundred brood mares which, on arriving, will be disposed of at very reasonable prices to all who call on him. Mr. Jordan of the same place is going to import about 1200 head cattle from Texas.
He will sell them at the lowest kind of prices when they reach his place. Mr. Barth is "____"on horse flesh and offers to bet $250 he can ride one of Springer's horses from here to Round Valley in twenty four hours and not hurt the horse either, or, he will bet he can make the round trip there and back in seventy two hours. As we had nothing more than a defaced postage stamp to straddle his "blind," necessity compelled us to refer the matter to others. If anyone desires to take him up he had better do it before Monday morning.
